Lesson CGL.4: Tier 4 Skill Test (Data Entry/Computer Proficiency)

Introduction:
Tier 4 of SSC CGL evaluates practical computer skills required for clerical and administrative jobs. It usually includes data entry speed tests, typing, and basic computer proficiency assessments. Accuracy and speed are equally important.


1. Key Components

  1. Data Entry Test (DEST):

    • Measures typing speed and accuracy

    • Typically involves entering data from text or numeric sheets

    • Commonly 2000–3000 key depressions in 15 minutes

  2. Computer Proficiency Test (CPT):

    • Microsoft Word: Formatting, editing, tables, mail merge

    • Microsoft Excel: Formulas, charts, data analysis

    • Microsoft PowerPoint: Creating and formatting slides

    • Internet & Email: Sending/receiving emails, basic online tasks


2. How to Approach

  • Practice Regularly: Use typing software to increase speed (minimum 8000 key depressions/hour recommended).

  • Accuracy First: Typing errors reduce marks; focus on error-free entry.

  • Shortcut Familiarity: Learn keyboard shortcuts for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Time Management: Complete practice tests within time limits.

  • Understand CPT Tasks: Know the basic functions in Word/Excel/PowerPoint.


3. SSC Tips

  • Maintain good posture and ergonomics during typing practice.
