Direct and indirect speech questions are common in SSC English exams. These test the ability to report speech correctly without changing the meaning.

  • Structure: Subject + Reporting Verb + Object + that + reported speech

  1. Tense Changes: Generally, shift one tense back in indirect speech.

    • Present → Past, Present Perfect → Past Perfect, etc.

  2. Pronouns: Change according to context.

    • Example: I → he/she, my → his/her

  3. Time & Place Words: Adjust if needed.

    • today → that day, tomorrow → the next day, here → there

  4. Questions: Use “if/whether” for yes/no questions.

    • Example: “Are you coming?” → He asked if I was coming.
