Lesson 3.8: Direct & Indirect Speech
Introduction:
Direct and indirect speech questions are common in SSC English exams. These test the ability to report speech correctly without changing the meaning.
1. Direct Speech

Definition: Quoting the exact words spoken.

Structure: “Subject + Verb + Object/Words spoken”

Example: Ram said, “I am going to school.”
2. Indirect Speech

Definition: Reporting the words spoken without quotation marks.

Structure: Subject + Reporting Verb + Object + that + reported speech

Example: Ram said that he was going to school.
3. Conversion Rules

Tense Changes: Generally, shift one tense back in indirect speech.

Present → Past, Present Perfect → Past Perfect, etc.

Pronouns: Change according to context.

Example: I → he/she, my → his/her

Time & Place Words: Adjust if needed.

today → that day, tomorrow → the next day, here → there

Questions: Use “if/whether” for yes/no questions.
