Lesson 2.7: Seating Arrangement & Puzzle Solving

Introduction:
Seating arrangement and puzzle questions are common in SSC exams. They test logical reasoning, analytical skills, and the ability to organize information systematically.


1. Seating Arrangement

  • Types:

    1. Linear Arrangement: People sit in a straight line.

      • Can be facing north or south.

      • Example: A sits left of B, C sits right of D. Find position of X.

    2. Circular Arrangement: People sit around a circle.

      • Directions can be inside/outside the circle.

      • Example: A faces center, B faces outward.

    3. Rectangular or Square Arrangement: People sit at corners or sides.

  • SSC Tips:

    • Draw diagrams to visualize positions.

    • Use symbols or numbers for clarity.

    • Solve step by step, noting each condition.


2. Puzzle Solving

  • Types:

    1. Scheduling puzzles: Assign tasks, days, or timings.

    2. Conditional puzzles: People/items with multiple conditions.

    3. Ranking puzzles: Arrange based on height, marks, or age.

  • SSC Tips:

    • Read all conditions before starting.

    • Use a table or chart to track information.

    • Eliminate impossible options quickly.


3. Example (Linear Arrangement)

Question: A, B, C, D, E sit in a row. B sits left of C. D sits right of A. E sits at one end. Find the arrangement.
Solution:

  • Place E at one end.

  • B left of C → B C

  • D right of A → A D

  • Combine → E B C A D (example solution)


4. Practice Questions

  1. 5 friends sit in a row: A, B, C, D, E. C is between A and D. B is at one end. Arrange them.

  2. 6 people sit around a circular table facing center. Find who is opposite whom.

  3. Scheduling puzzle: 4 students play on 4 different days. Find day for each.
