Lesson 10.4: Logical Reasoning & Data Interpretation

Logical Reasoning (LR) and Data Interpretation (DI) are crucial sections of General Aptitude in GATE and PSU exams. They test analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and ability to interpret data.

🔹 1. Introduction

  • Definition:

    • Logical Reasoning: Ability to analyze patterns, sequences, and relationships to arrive at conclusions.

    • Data Interpretation: Ability to extract information and solve problems from charts, graphs, and tables.

  • Applications: Aptitude tests, technical exams, interviews, and competitive assessments

  • Key Concepts: Syllogisms, puzzles, coding-decoding, bar charts, pie charts, tables, graphs

🔹 2. Logical Reasoning

  • Important Topics:

    1. Analytical Reasoning: Statements, assumptions, conclusions

    2. Syllogisms: Deductive reasoning using given premises

    3. Series & Patterns: Number, alphabet, or figure sequences

    4. Coding-Decoding: Transformations of letters, numbers, or symbols

    5. Blood Relations & Direction Sense: Relationships, distances, and directions

    6. Puzzles & Arrangements: Seating arrangements, ranking, grouping

  • Tips: Identify key information, draw diagrams, and avoid assumptions

🔹 3. Data Interpretation (DI)

  • Types of Data Representations:

    1. Tables: Rows and columns of numerical data

    2. Bar Charts: Compare values across categories

    3. Line Graphs: Show trends over time

    4. Pie Charts: Represent percentage distribution

    5. Mixed Graphs: Combination of charts

  • Techniques:

    • Read the title and axes carefully

    • Note key trends, maxima, minima, and totals

    • Calculate percentages, ratios, averages for questions

🔹 4. Solved Examples (PYQ Style)

  1. Syllogism: Statements → Conclusions → Select correct option

  2. Number series: 2, 6, 12, 20, ? → Find next number

  3. Bar chart: Calculate total sales of 3 products in 2 months

  4. Pie chart: Determine percentage contribution of a segment

  5. Puzzle: 5 people sitting in a row → Identify seating order based on clues

🔹 5. Practice Exercises

  1. Solve 5–10 logical reasoning problems including blood relations and direction sense

  2. Practice number and alphabet series

  3. Analyze tables to answer 5–6 DI questions

  4. Interpret bar charts, pie charts, and line graphs

  5. Solve ranking and arrangement puzzles

🔹 6. Summary

  • Logical Reasoning: Measures analytical thinking, problem-solving, and deduction skills

  • Data Interpretation: Measures ability to analyze numerical data from charts, graphs, and tables

  • Strategies: Draw diagrams, identify patterns, calculate quickly, avoid assumptions

  • Exam Tip: Focus on previous GATE/PSU LR & DI questions; time management is critical
