Lesson 8.2: Screening Test (OIR & PPDT)

Screening Test is the first stage of the SSB Interview, designed to shortlist candidates for further assessment. It consists of Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test and Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PPDT).

1. Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test

  • Purpose: Evaluate logical reasoning, analytical ability, and problem-solving skills

  • Components:

    • Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning

    • Series Completion, Analogies, Coding-Decoding

    • Arithmetic, Data Interpretation

  • Tips:

    • Practice previous year OIR papers

    • Focus on accuracy and speed

    • Use shortcut methods for calculations

2. Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PPDT)

  • Purpose: Assess imagination, observation, communication, and leadership skills

  • Procedure:

    1. Candidate is shown a picture for 30 seconds

    2. Writes a story in 4–5 minutes based on the picture

    3. Participates in a group discussion of all candidates’ stories

  • Evaluation:

    • Clarity of thoughts and imagination

    • Communication skills and confidence

    • Ability to cooperate and lead in group discussions

3. Tips for PPDT

  • Observe details carefully in the picture

  • Write a structured story with beginning, conflict, and resolution

  • Speak confidently and listen actively during group discussion

  • Demonstrate team spirit without dominating the discussion
