Lesson 1.4: Introduction to Operating Systems (Windows)

🔹 What is an Operating System?

An Operating System (OS) is the main software that manages all hardware and software on a computer. It acts as a bridge between the user and the computer hardware.

Without an operating system, the computer cannot function.

🔸 Main Functions of an Operating System:

  1. Controls hardware devices (keyboard, mouse, printer, etc.)

  2. Manages files and folders

  3. Runs applications and software

  4. Provides user interface (desktop, icons, start menu)

  5. Manages system memory and processing

🔹 Popular Types of Operating Systems:

Operating System Used In
Windows Offices, homes, schools
Linux Developers, servers
macOS Apple computers
Android Smartphones, tablets
iOS iPhones, iPads

Most offices use Windows OS, so we will focus more on that in this course.

🔹 Features of Windows Operating System:

  • Graphical User Interface (GUI): Easy to use with icons, buttons, and menus

  • File and folder management: Create, move, rename, delete files

  • Multitasking: Run multiple programs at the same time

  • Control Panel & Settings: Customize the system

  • Taskbar and Start Menu: Quick access to apps and files

🔹 Common Versions of Windows OS:

Version Use Case
Windows 7 Older systems
Windows 10 Most popular in offices
Windows 11 Latest version with new features

🖥️ Real-Life Example:

When you turn on your computer and see the desktop screen, icons, taskbar, and start menu — you’re interacting with the Operating System (like Windows).

It allows you to open MS Word, browse the internet, or play music — all through its interface.

Summary:
The Operating System is the heart of a computer’s functioning. It controls all devices, runs software, and provides a user-friendly interface. Windows is the most commonly used OS in offices.
