Lesson 6.3: IP Address, ISP, Connectivity Modes
To connect to the internet, every device needs a unique identity, a service provider, and a method of connection. This lesson covers all three.
🧠 1. What is an IP Address?
-
IP Address (Internet Protocol Address) is a unique number given to every device connected to the internet.
-
It works like a home address on the internet — used to identify and locate devices.
📌 Example: 192.168.1.1 or 2405:204:4320::1 (IPv6)
🔹 Two Versions of IP:
-
IPv4: Older, uses 4 number blocks (e.g., 192.168.0.1)
-
IPv6: Newer, longer format (for future use)
🌐 2. What is an ISP?
-
ISP stands for Internet Service Provider
-
It is the company that gives you internet access
🔸 Examples of ISPs:
-
JioFiber, Airtel Xstream, BSNL, ACT, Hathway
🔹 What ISP Provides:
-
Internet connection
-
Modem or router
-
Plan (data limit, speed)
🔌 3. Internet Connectivity Modes
There are different ways to connect to the internet:
| Mode | Description | Used In |
|---|---|---|
| Dial-up | Uses telephone line (very slow, outdated) | Rural/old systems |
| Broadband (DSL) | High-speed via landline | Homes, offices |
| Fiber Optic | Superfast internet using fiber cables | Cities, smart homes |
| Wi-Fi | Wireless connection via router | Homes, schools, cafes |
| Mobile Data | Uses SIM network (3G/4G/5G) | Smartphones, portable use |
| Hotspot | Shares mobile data wirelessly | Temporary connections |
Your IP address is your online identity, ISP is your internet provider, and connectivity mode is how you get online.
