Lesson 1.5: Software Types
Software is a set of instructions or programs that tell the computer what to do. Unlike hardware, software cannot be touched — it is installed or downloaded in the computer.
Software helps the hardware work properly and perform different tasks like typing, browsing the internet, playing music, and more.
💻 Main Types of Software
1. Application Software:
Used to perform specific tasks for the user.
Examples:
-
Microsoft Word (for typing)
-
Excel (for calculations)
-
VLC Media Player (for watching videos)
-
Google Chrome (for browsing)
-
Tally (for accounting)
2. System Software:
Controls and manages the computer hardware and provides a platform to run application software.
Examples:
-
Windows
-
Linux
-
macOS
-
Android
-
iOS
These operating systems are necessary for your device to function.
3. Utility Software:
Helps in maintenance and proper functioning of the system.
Examples:
-
Antivirus Software (like Quick Heal, Avast)
-
Disk Cleaner (removes junk files)
-
Backup Software
-
File Compression Tools (like WinRAR, 7-Zip)
4. Open Source Software:
Software whose source code is freely available. Anyone can use, modify, or share it.
Examples:
-
LibreOffice (alternative to MS Office)
-
GIMP (alternative to Photoshop)
-
Mozilla Firefox
-
Linux OS
These are free and community-developed alternatives to paid software.
5. Mobile Applications (Mobile Apps):
Small programs designed to run on smartphones and tablets.
Examples:
-
WhatsApp (messaging)
-
Google Pay (payments)
-
YouTube (video streaming)
-
Google Maps (navigation)
Apps are downloaded from app stores like Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
📝 Conclusion:
Software is essential for using computers and mobile devices. Without software, hardware is useless. Both work together to perform all the operations we do on digital devices.
