Lesson 3.2: Non-Verbal Reasoning (Series, Patterns, Analogy, Classification, Puzzle Solving)

Objective: Develop skills to solve non-verbal reasoning questions including visual series, patterns, analogies, classification, and puzzles efficiently.

1. Series

  • Definition: Identify the next figure or number in a sequence.

  • Types:

    • Number Series: Arithmetic or geometric patterns

      • Example: 2, 4, 8, 16 → next = 32

    • Figure Series: Shapes change in size, rotation, shading, or count

  • Tips:

    • Look for repetition, addition/subtraction, multiplication/division patterns.

    • Note rotations or mirror images in figure series.

2. Patterns & Analogy

  • Patterns: Identify rules governing shapes, numbers, or symbols.

  • Analogies: Determine relationship between two items and find the corresponding pair.

    • Example: Dog : Puppy :: Cat : ? → Kitten

  • Tips:

    • Focus on relationships, sizes, positions, and directions.

    • Practice common analogy patterns in figures and numbers.

3. Classification

  • Definition: Identify the odd one out from a group based on a rule.

  • Types: Numbers, letters, symbols, or figures.

  • Tips:

    • Check for shape, direction, size, count, or series differences.

    • Process of elimination helps solve quickly.

4. Puzzle Solving

  • Definition: Logical puzzles like seating arrangements, blood relations (non-verbal), ranking, or pattern-based problems.

  • Tips:

    • Draw diagrams, tables, or charts.

    • Note key information and constraints.

    • Solve step by step, never assume information not given.

5. Tips for Banking Exams

  • Practice daily puzzles and series problems to improve speed.

  • Time yourself while solving figure-based and analogy questions.

  • Use rough sheet sketches for pattern recognition and puzzle solving.

  • Regular practice enhances accuracy and confidence in non-verbal reasoning.

Lesson Summary:
Non-Verbal Reasoning involves series, patterns, analogies, classification, and puzzles. Observing patterns, practicing diagrams, and logical thinking are key to quickly solving these questions in Banking Exams.
