Lesson 2.4: Time, Work & Speed, Distance
Objective: Learn concepts and shortcut techniques for Time, Work, and Speed-Distance problems to solve them quickly in Banking Exams.
1. Time & Work Basics
-
Work Formula:
Work=Rate×TimeWork = Rate × Time
-
If A can complete a work in X days, A’s 1-day work = 1X\frac{1}{X}
-
-
Combined Work:
-
If A and B can do a work in X and Y days respectively:
1-day work of A+B=1X+1Y1 \text{-day work of A+B} = \frac{1}{X} + \frac{1}{Y}
-
Total days to complete = 11-day work of A+B\frac{1}{\text{1-day work of A+B}}
-
-
Efficiency Concept:
-
Efficiency ∝ Work done in 1 day
-
If A is twice as efficient as B, A will complete work in half the time of B
-
Example:
-
A can do a work in 12 days, B in 16 days. Days required together = 11/12+1/16=6.857≈7\frac{1}{1/12 + 1/16} = 6.857 \approx 7 days
2. Speed, Distance & Time Basics
-
Formulas:
Speed=DistanceTime,Time=DistanceSpeed,Distance=Speed×TimeSpeed = \frac{Distance}{Time}, \quad Time = \frac{Distance}{Speed}, \quad Distance = Speed × Time
-
Relative Speed:
-
Moving in same direction: Srel=S1–S2S_{rel} = S_1 – S_2
-
Moving in opposite direction: Srel=S1+S2S_{rel} = S_1 + S_2
-
-
Shortcut Examples:
-
If a car travels 60 km in 1.5 hours → Speed = 60 ÷ 1.5 = 40 km/h
-
Two trains moving opposite direction 80 km apart, speeds 40 km/h and 60 km/h → Time to meet = 80 ÷ (40+60) = 0.8 hr
-
3. Tips & Tricks for Banking Exams
-
Always convert time to hours or minutes consistently.
-
For work problems, use 1-day work method to simplify.
